The Magee Farmhouse has been part of the Kushla community since it was built in 1848. In all those years there have been four families that have lived within its walls. The two story house was built by black slaves, as were the outbuildings. It was the largest private residence for several miles once it was completed. The skill of the slave builders was excellent as the house has stood with very little help or repair since it was constructed.
Alabama State Capitol - Montgomery, Alabama
A visit to the Alabama State Capitol will give you a true opportunity to learn about the history of the state and the Confederacy. The Confederacy began in the original Senate chamber in Montgomery. It was chosen as the site to invite the seceding states to meet because of the central location, good railroad and river connections to the south and east and was the center of Southern radical activity. In February 1861 the Confederate Congress convened with delegates from South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana. Montgomery served as the capital of the Confederacy. The capital was moved to Richmond, Virginia in July of that year when Virginia seceded from the Union. There is a commemorative brass marker in the shape of a six-pointed star is set at the precise location (on the top step, to the right of the door, between the middle columns) where Jefferson Davis stood on February 18, 1861, to take his oath of office as first (and only) President of the Confederate States of America. If you are a fan of great Shakespeare then you really need to come to this festival. It is the 6th largest Shakespeare festival in the world. After beginning as a part-time with plays running for six weeks during the summer the Festival was moved from Anniston to Montgomery through the generous donation of Wynton Blount when he agreed to build them a new facility in Montgomery. Now the ASF runs year-round productions with more than 400 performances scheduled each year.
Alabama Department of Archives & History - Montgomery, Alabama
This stunning Alabama marble building is the oldest state-funded archives in U.S. Established in 1901 to provide an opportunity to share information on the public needs, to preserve documentation services to the state from the Civil War. Through the 1890's it was felt that there was a need to honor those who had served the Confederacy. There were monuments built but still, the need for records was desired so the ADAH held them for future generations to research and learn from about the contributions these brave people contributed to the war.
When the archive was established the state was over 80 years old and losing some of the documents that would be desired in future years. It was determined that the ADAH should be the keeper of these records. (...)
