Two Day Festival for the Blessing of the Fleet

Bayou La Batre, AL (St. Margaret’s Annual Blessing of the Fleet) The event will be held on the grounds of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, which is located at 13790 South Wintzell Avenue in Bayou La Batre, AL.

Traditionally held only on the first Sunday of May, the expanded two-day 2012 Blessing of the Fleet is sponsored by the City of Bayou La Batre and BP. There will be  a wide selection of family-friendly activities on Saturday, and Sunday,  from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days. Festival admission is free.

Admiral Raphael Semmes House – Mobile, Alabama

This house was built by its first owner, Peter Horta, in 1858 but is best known as the home of Admiral Raphael Semmes, captain of the Confederate sloop-of-war- CSS Alabama.  The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Focused on educating the public, doing marine science research, coastal zone management policy and marine science education this facility reaches deeply into the concerns and future of the waterways of the Gulf Coast Region.  The facility was founded in 1971 by the State Legislature and is Alabama’s marine science education and research laboratory.  The island is situated in the Gulf of Mexico and is surrounded by Mobile Bay, Mississippi Sound and the waters of the Gulf.  With this location it is a perfect location for a wide range of marine science activity.

The Magee Farmhouse has been part of the Kushla community since it was built in 1848.  In all those years there have been four families that have lived within its walls.  The two story house was built by black slaves, as were the outbuildings.  It was the largest private residence for several miles once it was completed.  The skill of the slave builders was excellent as the house has stood with very little help or repair since it was constructed.

Mixing your Alabama tourism adventure with some great jazz has to be some of the most exciting things that you will experience.  You can attend the FREE tow-day event in Alexander City at Strand Park in Downtown Alexander City on Friday and at the Lake Martin Amphitheater on Saturday.

Some of the best entertainers in jazz anywhere are always showing up for this outstanding event.  There are normally more than 10,000 people that come to hear great jazz and see the entertainers that are there to put on a top notch show.  They perform on a stage erected downtown in Strand Park on Friday night and then at the Amphitheater on Saturday.
