If you will be traveling through Alabama or spending time in beautiful Calhoun County, take the opportunity to visit the Anniston Museum of Natural History. This incredible museum is located halfway between Birmingham and Atlanta in Lagarde Park, Anniston, just off of Rt. 20.
This museum features such a variety of exhibits, everyone is bound to find something fascinating at the Anniston Museum of Natural History. There are gardens and nature trails as well as exhibition halls to explore. Temporary exhibitions interpreting humankind’s relationship with nature through the visual arts are also on display at the Museum.
Gardens and Nature Trails
Spending time in the gardens and nature trails at the Anniston Museum of Natural History is relaxing as well as educational. In the Courtyard and Tropical Conservatory, you’ll experience a tropical environment featuring towering palms and bananas, colorful and fragrant blossoms, lush foliage and a fountain sculpture and koi pool.
The Wildlife Garden and Bird of Prey Trail features plants and animals native to the south-eastern United States. The Wildlife Garden is a habitat area with a beautiful pond and waterfall and native plants, trees, birds and small mammals. Along the Bird of Prey Trail, you’ll enjoy up-close views of hawks and owls. You can also walk the 3.4 mile long Nature Trail and see two different types of forested areas, or relax in the quite and peaceful Recollection Garden.
Exhibit Halls
There are seven permanent exhibits at the Anniston Museum of Natural History. The popular Dynamic Earth exhibit focuses on processes that affect the Earth, such as weather and plate tectonics. A reconstruction of an Alabama cave environment and a pre-historic diorama with full scale dinosaurs and a prehistoric shark make for an unforgettable experience. The NatureSpace Exhibit is a hands-on exhibition exploring the mysterious side of Alabama’s natural environment. It features interactive exhibits relating to archaeology, animals, plants, geology and more.
Other intriguing exhibits at the Anniston Museum of Natural History focus on wildlife. The Attack and Defense exhibit explores the relationship between predators and prey in terms of North American wildlife, and the Birds of the Americas exhibit contains hundreds of birds from the Regar-Werner Ornithology Collection displayed in recreated natural habitat groups.
The Anniston Museum of Natural History also features an exhibit devoted to Alabama’s many habitats and biological diversity. The Environments of Africa and Ancient Egypt exhibits give visitors a unique look at two natural environments that differ greatly from the southeastern U.S.
In addition to fabulous indoor and outdoor attractions, the Anniston Museum of Natural History features an impressive Museum Store. Group tours as well as many educational resources and programs are also available at the Museum.
